FUNCTIONS OF NME-ICT
The Department of
Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development has administered a
programe titled “National Mission on Education Technology through Information
and Communication Technology” (NME-ICT) to leverage the potential of ICT in
order to make the best quality content accessible to all learners in the
country, free of cost. Some of the major functions of this mission are
mentioned below.
The NME-ICT provides
connectivity to all colleges and university in the country. They allow access
to high quality e-content to all learners in the country which is free of cost.
NME-ICT bridges the digital gap between the urban and rural teachers and
students in the higher education sector regarding their abilities to use
computing devices for teaching and learning resources. The mission trains as
well as empowers the teachers to effectively use the new methods of teaching
and learning. It offers teachers and learners access to computing devices at a
low cost
The
NME ICT also effectively utilizes intellectual resources thus minimizing
wastage of time in scouting for opportunities in society. They provide a
platform for sharing ideas and techniques as well as pooling of knowledge
resources. The mission helps in nurturing scholars and learners. It also helps
in improving course curriculum. The opportunity for multilingual content
development is provided to the learners. It focuses on appropriate pedagogy for e-learning, providing facility of performing
experiments through virtual laboratories, on line testing and certification, online
availability of teachers to guide and mentor learners, utilization of available
Education Satellite (EduSAT) and Direct Home platforms, training and
empowerment of teachers to effectively use the new method of teaching learning
etc. It also provides voice support for
educational material delivery and interactivity for the content on the portal.
The mission also develops interfaces for other cognitive facilities which would
in turn help physically challenged learners. It helps in spreading digital
literacy for teacher empowerment thereby encouraging teachers to be available
on the net to guide the learners. NME-ICT also helps in making broadband
affordable for every learner. They provide e-journals and e-books, utilizing
the repository of contents generated so far and the automation of evaluation
processes. They also provide e-learning support to every higher education
institution for technology assisted learning.
